Confidence and Cover Letters
I hate cover letters. They’re awful and a pain in the ass to write, but when you’re constantly applying for jobs that potentially hundreds of other people are applying for, it could be the one thing to get you in the door. That one thing to set you apart from the rest.
I haven’t had a whole lot of luck lately when it comes to the job hunt. I haven’t had any new leads in a while and I’m starting to get really frustrated. In a last ditch effort, I asked my roommate to look over my cover letter for me. She had offered before, but honestly, I was a little embarrassed and slightly intimidated. My roommate is a genius. She’s so smart and really, the fact that she hasn’t already disowned me for being completely retarded is amazing. So, I sent it over to her, and anxiously waited for her reply:
“So, I have one initial suggestion, but honestly, this cover letter is stellar. It really sets your apart and gives you a ton of personality. If this doesn’t get you an interview, I don’t know what will.”
Honestly, this gave me a total confidence boost. I’ve always been fairly secure in myself, but consistent silence from my inbox can be really disheartening. I’m feeling a lot better, and hopefully, she’s right. Now it’s just a waiting game.
